Is Curved Glass Expensive?
The rate and price of a curved glass panel actually depend on quite a few factors. If you want a custom curved Gorilla Glass, it will be more costly and expensive than a regular or a standard curved float glass; the same goes when you compare a curved anti-reflective (AR) or anti-glare glass (AG) with standard float glass.
And while curving the glass also adds to its overall price, that wouldn’t be the only area where the price matters.
How Do You Make a Curved Glass?

The process of making or manufacturing curved glass requires a few specialized tools, devices, and equipment. However, the process is as simple as it is.
To give you a type of a quick glance, here’s a brief overview of how curved or bent glass is made:
- The raw glass material is provided and is prepared by the manufacturer.
- Then, the mold in which the shape or curve that the glass will be taking is examined and assessed.
- After that, the said mold will be preheated to the temperature that’s needed to reshape and form the glass. Usually, this temperature would be around 600 to 650 °Cor about 1,112 to 1,202 °F and needs to be on for at least an hour.
- When it’s already preheated to this temperature, wait for the mold to cool and take it out of the kiln.
- Wait for about five (5) minutes for the mold to slightly cool.
- After that, place the glass on top of the preheated mold, and then put it back into the kiln.
- In order for the glass to bend, the temperature needs to be at least 1,300 to 1,400 °C or 2,372 to 2,552 °F.
- When the kiln is closed, the oven or the kiln needs to be adjusted regularly so that the curving or the bending of the glass is uniform.
- When the glass is already bent or curved, the temperature is slowly decreased inside the oven. This prevents the glass from shattering because of the fluctuating temperatures it’s set to.
NOTE: If the environment is set to constant temperatures, some parts of the glass could contract quickly, resulting in cracks or damages to the surface of the glass.
Overall, the process takes somewhere between three (3) to four (4) hours for a single piece of glass product.
That’s the usual structure or process of how suppliers and manufacturers curve flat glass units. The success of this process would typically depend on the accuracy of the temperatures, as well as the machine that’s used.
