What is a Glass Rod?

Figure 1: Sample image of glass rods in the same sizes and diameters

A glass rod is a type of glass component that’s mostly used in the chemistry or the chemical industry for mixing and stirring chemicals.

In the manufacturing and engineering sector, they’re used as base materials for the purpose of creating or transforming them into different materials such as glass tubes, hexagonal rods, and even glass sheets!

You’ll find a lot of different purposes for glass rods, but the majority of it would be in the chemical and the pharmaceutical industry.

Clear Glass Rod

Figure 2: An image of a four-cornered transparent or clear glass rod

SXET is skilled in the production of clear glass rods. These are the glass rods that are not imbued with color and are often left transparent. This is the general form of glass rods and this is the form that is sold in the market for businesses and organizations. We create thousands of clear glass rods per week, distributed to clients worldwide.

Colored Glass Rod

Figure 3: Glass rods in different colors

Colored glass rods are the exact opposite of clear glass rods. These are the types of glass rods that are colored and shaded according to what the client or the buyer wants. SXET can produce red-colored glass rods, yellow-colored glass rods, blue-colored glass rods, green-colored glass rods, and many others more!

Are Glass Rods the Same as Glass Tubes?

Figure 4: Image of glass tubes, which are clearly different from what glass rods are

In essence, glass rods and glass tubes follow the same flow, shape, and usually, the same size as well. However, the distinctive factor between glass tubes and glass rods would be their function and how they’re put up.

Glass rods do not usually have an opening. They’re closed from end to end and they’re not used to store chemicals and fluids, they’re used for stirring.

Glass tubes, on the contrary, would usually have one (1) opening, and in some cases, two (2) openings and is made for the purpose of storing liquids and fluids. Sometimes, it’s used for the purpose of mixing and heating chemicals, too.

In these factors alone, you can see that glass rods and glass tubes are very much opposites. So, the next time you find yourself wondering whether or not they’re the same, they’re not!

What Materials Are Used to Create Glass Rods?

Figure 5: An image of a borosilicate glass sheet, one of the major materials used to produce glass rods

The materials used to create glass rods are usually the same materials used to create glass tubes. These usually revolve around different variants and types of glass, that have distinctive effects and features.

To help you with it, though, the most common materials used to produce and manufacture glass rods are:

Borosilicate Glass

This is the most robust and the strongest type of glass for this purpose. It’s temperature-resistant, and it’s capable of resisting chemical and acidic reactions. Moreover, it also has a low thermal coefficient, making it exceptionally great in terms of resisting changes in chemical and acidic properties.

Quartz Glass

Quartz glass comes in first runner up after borosilicate glass in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. It’s a material that contains high levels of thermal shock resistance, which can be used for any type of procedure without it cracking.

In chemical resistance and electrical insulator, it’s maintained at a superior level, too.

Actinic Glass

Actinic glass is the type of glass that is the best in terms of high visibility and is stained in order to protect the substrate from any acidic reaction that can alter the physical form of the material. It’s also an excellent tool to decrease both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared light in intercepting a material.

These are among the most common materials used in the production or manufacturing of glass rods.

QUICK NOTE: Other than glass, though, glass rods can also be made from metal, acrylic glass (plastic), as well as other components that seem fit to whatever application they’ll be used for.

Is Glass Rod a Metal?

While the common form of glass rods isn’t metal, it can also be made from metal material, too. Don’t be too worked up on it, though, because a metal rod isn’t common.

Usually, metal rods are used in the construction or the structural engineering sector as additives to door handles, threading of concrete, as well as a holder of construction and structural objects and components.

They’re far form the primary uses of standard glass rods.

1-Inch Diameter Glass Rod

Figure 6: 1-inch Diameter Glass Rod

SXET can help you produce 1-inch diameter glass rods as they’re primarily used in the pharmaceutical and medical industry. They’re typically used for homogenous mixtures and combinations of various fluids and chemicals. We can help you with 1-inch diameter clear glass rods or 1-inch diameter colored rods.

Pyrex Glass Rods

Figure 7: An image of a Pyrex glass rod

Need Pyrex-specific glass rods? Not to worry, we here at SXET can produce OEM Pyrex glass rods! They’re not really from Pyrex, but the materials and the components used to produce and manufacture them are similar to that of used by the brand. Our Pyrex glass rods have been continually tested and assessed to be within, even exceed the requirements by businesses and clients.

Clear Acrylic Glass Rods

Figure 8: An image of different-sized extruded clear acrylic glass rods

For other useful purposes, SXET can produce clear acrylic glass rods. These are semi-glass products, which are not really glass but close to it, but they’re a lot stronger, more durable, and less brittle compared to all other types of glasses manufactured to be glass rods.

What Are the Applications of a Glass Rod?

Obviously, the primary applications of glass rods would be involving anything in the chemical industry. They’re typically used to mix, combine, and to create new and advanced forms of fluids and chemicals.

Apart from this, though, there are other applications and uses of glass rods that encompass our knowledge of it. Here at SXET, we produce and manufacture glass rods for many different types of businesses, some of the most common ones include:

  • Laser and Laser Manufacturing Industry
  • Electronics Industry
  • Semiconductor Industry
  • Machinery and Manufacturing Industry
  • Optical and Ophthalmology Industry
  • Environmental and Industrial Sector
  • And Many More!

QUICK NOTE: Thanks to their sheer strength, you’ll never have a shortage of where you can use them. If you need regular glass rods for your business industry, then it will be your best bet to choose and purchase borosilicate or quartz glass rods as an alternative, too!

Borosilicate Clear Rods

SXET can help you in producing clear borosilicate glass rods. These are glass rods made from borosilicate glass, guaranteeing strength, reliability, thermal shock resistance, and even chemical resistance. Not only that, but our borosilicate clear rods are also excellent acid and alkali resistors, which are perfect for any chemical-related application.

12mm Borosilicate Glass Rods

Figure 9: An example of 12mm and 6mm glass rods

The size of 12mm for borosilicate glass rods is one, if not the most popular and most-sold size we have for glass rods here at SXET. The flexibility of the 12mm thickness and diameter makes it an extremely useful material in all industries involved. They are versatile enough to be used in various applications that do not involve the mixture and combination of materials as they are sleek, thin, and easy to use.

Red Glass Rods

Figure 10 – A red-colored glass rod

In terms of colored glass rods, red glass rods are the most sold out of all we offer. Most of our orders of red glass rods are for the chemical and laboratory apparatus industry as they are known as perfect indicators of whether a particular chemical or mixture is reacting. We can produce all lengths and types of red glass rods you might need for your application!

Different Types of Glass Rods

The types of glass rods usually refer to the type of material used to create them. Akin to glass tubes, the common types and indicators of glass rods are distributed by the materials used to produce and manufacture them.

Here’s the list of the most common and most-sought-after glass rod types:

Borosilicate Glass Rods

These are the most common material for glass rods primarily because of their chemical, acid, and thermal shock resistance. They wouldn’t bulge even if you subject them to highly reactive fluids and liquids!

Fused Silica Glass Rods

Akin to borosilicate glass rods, those made from fused silica can also deliver promising effects and benefits. You can expect these glass rods to be resistant to acid and chemical reactions, too, but not as good as borosilicate glass in terms of thermal shock resistance.

Phosphate Glass Rods

Being one of the perfect glass types for glass rods in terms of iron oxide addition, phosphate glass rods are also one of our best-sellers here at SXET. They’re able to absorb heat during the times when iron oxide is added and included in the mixture of chemicals.

Optical Glass Rods

These are glass rods that are used in the field or industry of optics. SXET’s optical glass rods are usually thick in diameter and are ideally strong, durable, and environment-resistant in nature. They need to be visually clear and optically picture-perfect in order for them to be deemed and tagged as optical rods because their main role in the market is for the purpose of sight.

Laminated Glass Rods

Last, but most definitely not least are laminated glass rods. From the term alone, the glass material used in this concoction are laminated glass units, and they are for the purpose of sound insulation. They’re usually additives in equipment and structures that require sound insulation, and they’ll be able to block noise waves that are both incoming and outgoing.

Glass Rod Sizes

Glass rods vary very much in size, in fact, many manufacturers are already offering customizations of these because of the mix and the wide versatility of the sizes.

Commonly, though, the sizes of glass rods are between 100mm to 400mm in length, and about 5mm in diameter. Here with us at SXET Glass Co., Ltd., though, we won’t bore you with the details you don’t need to know – we can offer specifically custom glass rod sizes that would befit whatever you need!

Send us a sketch or a draft of the glass rod you want, with the size you think befits it best and we’ll do our best to help you with it!

Double Helix Glass Rod

SXET can produce a heap of double-helix glass rods that are specific for businesses and organizations in the lighting & fixture, and architectural sector. Our common client for double helix glass rods are businesses in the light and glassworks business.

Bullseye Glass Rod

You can entrust to us the retail or wholesale production of bullseye glass rods, or the glass rods that are used as designing and styling elements. Bullseye glass rod products are unorthodox products and are rarely ordered in retail. They’re typically bought and purchased wholesale because of what their function and purpose is.

Can You Temper Glass Rods?

Figure 11: Tempered glass rods in different lengths

Yes, in fact, we here at SXET offer tempered glass rods! These are glass rods that are fully reinforced to be able to withstand pressure, stress, and force, all the while being resistant to chemicals, acidity, and mild-to-aggressive chemical reactions!

Tempered glass rods are engineered to be perfect the way they are and are typically ordered by businesses and organizations in the chemical or chemistry industry.

But to answer the question, yes, it is possible to temper glass rods. The process on how they’re done will just be dependent on the type of material used.

Can You Bend Borosilicate Glass Rods?

Borosilicate glass rods might be sturdy, strong, and ultimately durable, but they’re not stagnant and brittle like how people like to think of them.

When subjected to the right temperatures, borosilicate glass rods can be bent, shaped, and formed accordingly to the needs and wants of the buyer. They’re like regular glass, and the only difference is the initial form they take.

The usual process of how they’re bent would be the following:

  1. The glass rod is subjected to the temperature in which it softens up.
  2. After that, the rod is bent and stretched to the shape and form wanted and needed.
  3. When bent, it’s cooled down so that the bend or the stretch is retained.

Colored Glass Rods vs. Clear Glass Rods

The only major difference between colored glass rods and clear glass rods is the surface’s color. There isn’t anything distinct between them, but their colors.

Their chemical and acidic resistance is the same, their thermal shock resistance is the same, and their overall temperature resistance and temperature ranges are similar.

Of course, if the type of glass used for the clear glass rod is different from the color glass rod, then that’s a totally different story. We’re talking about clear glass rods and color glass rods that come from the same material, so, they’ll typically be the same.

Where Can You Buy High-Quality Glass Rods?

You can purchase high-quality glass rods from various sources. In fact, you can even purchase them online! The thing about them, though, is that they would usually be quite more costly and expensive compared to purchasing them straight from manufacturers and suppliers like us here at SXET.

It’s unknown language for us here at SXET that we are the top provider of both retail and wholesale glass rods in the market. We’re skilled and capable of producing a wide range of glass rod types, both big and small to our clients worldwide.
