What is a Lens Protector?

A lens protector is a type of device that’s made out of a material capable of protecting the lens component of a particular device.

Camera glass protector

Figure 1 – Image of an iPhone 12 lens protector

Ideally, a single lens protector is a piece of glass that’s reinforced and enhanced to be able to protect and keep the surface of the lens safe and secure.

Normally, lens protectors are made from high-quality glass such as Gorilla Glass, tempered glass, and the like.

What Does a Camera Lens Protector Do?

From what it’s called alone, it’s already quite obvious what its purpose is. Its main use is to be able to protect the lens of the camera from scratches, cracks, and other types of damages.

Lens protector

Figure 2 – Lens protectors help protect the condition of the camera lens

To give you its worth and importance, imagine dropping your smartphone face up. When it hits the ground, the camera is the most susceptible to being damaged because it’s the most exposed component.

If you aren’t using a camera lens protector, there’s a huge chance that the surface of the camera breaks or shatters instantly. On the contrary, if you install and use a camera lens protector on it, you can be carefree that it wouldn’t be damaged, let alone be scratched because the protector will be the one to absorb the damage first.

People seldom use it for display and design. In fact, adding it on top of your smartphone’s camera is believed to tamper the image quality – how true is this? We’ll talk about more of that in the latter part of this buying guide.

Where Do You Use Custom Lens Protectors?

Custom lens protectors

Figure 3 – The most common use you can have for it would be smartphones

You normally use lens protectors on devices that have cameras, the most common of which include smartphones, digital cameras, security cameras, web cameras, outdoor sports cameras, and other sorts of the like.

Others use it to cover their cameras to keep them protected from temperature, chemical reactions, etc.

Since the purpose of these custom lens protectors is to protect the lens, it is seen as the most effective in terms of protecting the surface from scratches and damages, as well as keeping other external agents that could be on it from penetrating the interior of the device.

What Devices Can You Use Lens Protector On?

Custom lens protectors for device

Figure 4 – Custom lens protectors can protect your camera’s lenses

You can use lens protectors on all devices that have lenses or cameras on them! Yes, you can literally use it on every device that has a camera for increased protection and security!

Some of the most common devices that you can use it on include:

  • iPhones
  • Samsung Phones
  • Huawei Phones
  • Web Cameras
  • Security Cameras and CCTVs
  • Sports Cameras
  • Medical Device Cameras
  • Digital Cameras
  • And Many More!

Are Mobile Camera Lens Protectors Necessary?

Mobile camera lens protectors

Figure 5 – Mobile camera lens protectors can lengthen the lifespan of your camera’s lenses

It goes without saying that walking around with your smartphone blindly or without any protection is dangerous.

While most camera glass units today are made from fully enhanced materials like AGC Glass or Dragontrail Glass, Gorilla Glass, and other reinforced optical lenses, they’re still not indestructible.

If too much force is pressed against it, it will eventually break and shatter.

But, if your device is equipped with a camera lens screen protector, the danger is minimized.

Can Lens Protectors Go Bad?

Just like any other material, lens protectors can go bad especially if they’re not maintained and cared for properly.

Custom lens screen protector

Figure 6 – A brand new lens screen protector

Some of the most common things that can happen to them include:

  • Chipping off
  • Being removed from its adhesive
  • Cracking and scratching

The right way to maintain them is the same as how you maintain and care for screen protectors.

What is a Liquid Camera Lens Protector?

It’s a type of camera lens protector that utilizes advanced technology, which only requires people to wipe the material to create the protector.

Unlike regular protectors, liquid camera lens protectors are just applied by wiping them instead of applying or installing them.

Compared to traditional lens protectors, these liquid camera protectors are thin and easy to the eyes. Many people are using it on top of an existing lens screen protector to improve the shatter and the scratch-resistance of the underlying protector.

How Are Custom Lens Protectors Made?

Not all lens protector manufacturers follow the same exact process in producing and manufacturing custom camera lens protectors.

Lens camera protectors manufacturer

Figure 7 – A factory that produces and manufactures lens camera protectors

But, here’s the general and the standard structure of how it’s made:

Step 1: Cutting of the Material

The first thing that lens protector manufacturing companies do is that they cut the material that they decide to use. They cut it about 97 to 98% of how they want to see it in the final result.

It’ll not be the final size yet, but it will be close to what it will look like.

Step 2: CNC Grinding

The reason why it’s not cut to its final size is that it needs to undergo grinding or the process where its edges would be shimmed down so that it becomes smooth and free from discrepancies.

Since it’s for custom lens protectors, the grinding would be different and customized depending on the requirements and the needs of the client.

Step 3: Curving and Angling

After undergoing grinding, the protector will now be curved and angled. The degree to which it’ll be bent and curved depends on the device it will be used on.

Therefore, it’ll still depend on the needs and the requests of the client.

Step 4: Tempering of the Protector

Once it’s been successfully curved and bent, it’ll then come to the process of tempering, which is the strengthening of the lens protector.

Usually, heat tempering is done to further strengthen the capacity of the lens protector. But now, there are other methods and processes of tempering glass camera protectors.

Step 5: Cleaning

Before it gets checked and inspected, it’ll first have to go through cleaning. The most common and customary process used is ultrasonic bath cleaning.

This eradicates the totality of all the unwanted agents that have surfaced to the camera glass protector.

Step 6: Quality Inspection

Then lastly, before it’s packaged, engineers and experts take one good look at the finished product. They are the ones who determine whether the product is a go or if it’s a no.

Oftentimes, the people who sit here are those that are experts and experienced enough to see through the discrepancies and inconsistencies of finished products.

It will be in their decision to proceed or to reject the final product.

Can Lens Protectors Get Wet?

The primary purpose of lens protectors is to keep your camera lenses dry, clean, and free from dust specs and dirt.

Yes, it’s not bad if you get your lens protectors wet. In fact, that’s what you actually use them for.

What Glass Types Are Used to Create Custom Lens Protectors?

Several glass lens protector manufacturers experiment on the type of glass they use to create custom camera protectors.

Glass camera lens protector

Figure 8 – AGC Glass used as glass camera lens protector

The most common of which are tempered glass units as they are easy to find and look for in the market. Apart from tempered glass, though, other types of glass that are used include:

  • Gorilla Glass
  • Dragontrail Glass
  • Schott Glass
  • Flexible Tempered Glass
  • Acrylic Glass

NOTE: More and more lens protector fabrication companies are coming up with new and better materials to be used as the raw material for their products.

There’s really no limit on the materials used to create custom lens protectors given the fact that they pass the requirements.

How Do You Put a Glass Lens Screen Protector on Your Camera?

The process of putting or installing a new camera lens protector is not as complex and as difficult as many of you might think.

Camera lens protector applying

Figure 9 – Image from a clip applying or installing a camera lens protector

As a matter of fact, the process is the same as how you put on and install regular screen protectors.

For the benefit of everyone, including beginners, here’s the complete step-by-step process of how you can install it:

  1. Check and look at the complete package of the lens protector you purchased. Look at it and see if it is complete.
  2. After that, the next thing you want to do is to take the lens protector out. Most, if not all lens protector suppliers cover the primary material of the lens protector before putting it inside the package first.
  3. Before installing it, check if the lens screen protector has any scratches or damages on it. This way, you’ll be able to return it to your retailer if it contains any discrepancies.
  4. Using the lint-free cloth or the microfiber cloth included in the package, you need to wipe the surface of the camera so that it’ll be free from grease, oils, fingerprints, and things of the like.
  5. Once you see that it’s clean from dirt, oils, and grease, position the lens protector so that it covers the entirety of the lens.
  6. Now, before you proceed to install it, use the sticker guide to be able to lift it easily for repositioning.
  7. Carefully lower it to make it stick to the exterior of the camera’s lens.
  8. If there are bubbles, use a card or a squeegee to remove the air bubbles.

That’s how you install a camera lens protector!

What is the Best Lens Protector?

There’s currently an ongoing debate as to what the best type of material is for lens protectors. Many experts say that it is tempered glass because of its flexibility, while others say that Gorilla Glass takes this place due to its toughness and overall performance.

Based on the data released by lens protector manufacturing companies, the most sought-after material is Gorilla Glass at around 0.4 mm thick.

This is because of its flexibility, malleability, versatility, and it’s overall strength.

What is the Natural Color of Lens Protectors?

The natural color of lens protectors is transparent.

Transparent lens screen protectors

Figure 10 – Transparent is the natural way how lens screen protectors look

The vast majority of lens protector manufacturing companies produce it in this color because applying color could tamper with the color and image quality of the camera.

However, there are lens screen protectors that have a darker shade and hue to have dimmed effect when taking photos.

Acrylic Glass vs. Glass Camera Screen Protectors

Acrylic glass or thermoplastic material is also a common material used to create lens protectors.

Acrylic glass lens protector

Figure 11 – Acrylic glass used as a lens protector

A lot of people actually believe that acrylic glass screen protectors are more durable, stronger, and a lot longer-lasting than glass lens protectors.

Is this actually true? Are thermoplastic or acrylic glass lens protectors actually better and more effective compared to glass lens protectors?

To help you with it, we decided to give you a breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of using both.

Strength and Durability

The primary difference between acrylic glass (thermoplastic) and glass is that the latter lasts longer and is more durable during application.

More often than not, glass lens protector manufacturers use tempered glass to create the protectors that their clients are looking for. And generally, tempered glasses would be around 0.3 to 0.5 mm in thickness.

Good-quality acrylic glass protectors, on the flip side, are around 0.1 to 0.2 mm.

In terms of strength, acrylic glass would not stand a chance against the tempered glass. When you scratch thermoplastic lens protectors, it would easily show and manifest on the exterior – you might even see scratches when you place or put them inside your pocket if you don’t carry them with ease!

Visuals or Looks

When it comes to looks, plastic would look better. Why? – Because of the simple fact that it’s thinner. Unlike installing heavy-duty tempered glass, acrylic glass would look as if it’s a natural part of the phone – you won’t notice it when it’s installed on a device.

While 0.3 to 0.5 mm lens protectors are not as thick, their overall effects when it’s looked at from afar will be different.

Usability

In terms of usage, tempered glass lens protectors would feel more natural and they’ll be easy on your fingers. With plastic, since they’re made out of complex raw materials and compounds, you might feel a bit of strain while using it.

However, do take note that tempered glass units are thick, and therefore, if it isn’t specialized and developed, it could be difficult to press on the screen or some of the buttons.

Cost

Of course, plastic costs way cheaper than glass. Glass lens protectors are made and manufactured using a complex method, and therefore, it will definitely be more expensive and costly.

And while people say that the price difference between the two (2) is not that big, you’ll actually be able to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of using glass lens protectors.

Application

And last but most definitely not least would be how you would apply glass lens protectors. Glass lens protectors made out of glass would be easy to install, why? – This is because of the smoothness and the fairness of the material.

Applying and putting plastic on top of a phone’s screen could be rougher and more difficult.

These are the differences between acrylic glass and real glass protectors. Many of you might think of it as something that’s light, but, when you choose what you want to use, you’ll need to consider it based on what you’re looking for.

What Coating Treatments Can You Apply on Custom Camera Lens Protector?

You can choose from the many options of coating treatments for the lens protector that you want. There’s the anti-reflective (AR) coating, the anti-glare (AG) treatment, the anti-fingerprint or anti-smudge coating, anti-scratch coating, UV anti-reflective (AR) coating, and others!

Think of the coating treatment as the first line of defense that your lens protectors have. If it’s treated with an anti-glare film or cover, then you can expect that when you use it, it’ll not glare up when it hits a high intensity of light.

In case you were wondering, these coating treatments are additives to the overall function of your lens protectors.

Although there are a lot of options to choose from, lens protector fabrication companies consider it as part of their processes to include the coating or the treatment process.

Benefits of Using Glass Lens Protectors

Before you dive deep into the information on glass lens protectors, do you know what the benefits and advantages are in using them?

Glass lens protectors

Figure 12 – Glass lens protectors can keep your lens’s condition at the original

Do you know how you can use it to your advantage in terms of using your machines and devices?

To name a few, here are the most known and the most wanted benefits of using glass lens protectors.

Prevention of Dust and Fingermark

Firstly, using lens protectors on your devices can prevent the accumulation of dust and fingermarks. For instance, if you have an iPhone 12 Pro Max lens protector, you wouldn’t worry about fingermarks on your camera’s lens.

Other than the fact that it can cover more than 90% of your camera’s lens, most of the lens protectors nowadays are equipped with an oleophobic coating, which will substantially decrease the absorption of smudge, oil, and grease.

Protection and Security of the Lens

Another benefit that you can get if you use lens protectors is that you’ll be able to protect and secure the overall condition of the lens.

For instance, it can protect your lens if you put your phone in your pocket and coins, pens, or any other sharp object accidentally scratches it.

UV Damage Protection

While not all glass lens protectors in the market have it, the vast majority of them can assist you as they can help you be protected from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays.

This protection is actually present thanks to the treatments and the coatings that have been done to your product.

To Keep Water Off the Lens

Try to imagine that you have an iPhone 11, and let’s say, you decided not to equip it with an iPhone 11 lens protector.

When you accidentally submerge it in water, the small dents on your camera could be a threat because water can penetrate it. This can cause your entire phone to be bricked.

It Keeps Your Lenses Shatterproof

And last but most definitely not least is that it can make sure that your lenses are going to be protected from shatter and shock.

Unlike using it without a camera screen protector, a camera lens protector for your iPhone will definitely make sure that your lenses are kept shock and shatterproof.

These are the top advantages and benefits of using lens screen protectors. And while many of you might think that it’s indestructible, it’s actually not.

In fact, there are a couple of drawbacks to using them as well!

Drawbacks of Using Glass Lens Protectors

Lens protector for iPhone

Figure 13 – If not installed properly, it can do more harm than good

To give you some of the most noticeable and most-known cons and disadvantages of using lens protectors, some of them include the following:

It Can Trap Dust

This happens especially when the lens protector is not properly installed. Most of the time, people who install it by themselves fail to install it in how it should, therefore, it leaves an opening or a chance for dust and dirt to penetrate and stick to the lens.

This is why if you are going to install or apply it on your device, make sure that the lenses are properly cleaned and sanitized first.

It Can Subtly Alter Image Quality

The most common drawback of using these camera protectors is that they can have subtle effects on the quality of images and videos.

For example, consider your smartphone, let’s say you have an iPhone 11. So, you have an iPhone 11 lens protector, the quality might slightly change, especially if you are going to use it under direct sunlight.

It Can Create a Vignette

In case you weren’t aware, a color vignette is a type of occurrence where a specific area is highlighted. Oftentimes, the borders or the outer parts of the image would be darker, sometimes even blurred.

Some lens protectors, especially those that are low quality, would have this effect.

It Does Not Offer 100% Protection

While a lot of people think that lens protectors offer extreme protection, it does, but not in a full way.

Yes, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 lens protectors can protect your camera from regular damages and discrepancies like scratches, cracks, and dust, water, and all those kinds of things, but can it make your lenses indestructible?

Contrary to what people believed in, lens screen protectors will protect your lenses, yes, but only to a certain degree. When you drop it face up, your lenses would not be scratched the first time.

However, if the lens protector is not shatter and impact-resistant, its shards could damage and scratch the lens, which could actually cause more harm than good to the camera’s lens.

Phone 11 and iPhone 12 Lens Protector Hardness Level

iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro lens protector

Figure 14 – iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro lens protector

9H is a level of hardness in the Mohs scale and it’s not used just by an iPhone 11 lens protector. As a matter of fact, many, if not all devices that can be equipped with a screen protector have it.

At the moment, the usual hardness of iPhone 11, as well as iPhone 12 lens protectors is at 7H. But, there are lens protector manufacturers that are making 9H the standard hardness for their products.

But what makes it special and effective? What traits does the 9H hardness of screen protectors have?

That brings us to our next question, which is…

What Hardness Level Should Your iPhone 11 Lens Protector Be In?

We mentioned above that the lens protector for iPhone 12 Pro Max, as well as the lens protector iPhone 11, is at the standard of 7H for hardness. However, that is constantly changing and now, the recommended hardness level of your iPhone lens protector should be 9H.

What is the 9H Hardness of Lens Protectors?

9H hardness is a hardness level that refers to the Mohs mineral hardness scale. To give a short background, the levels span from one (1) to ten (10), with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

Now, diamonds take over the 5th up to the 10th spot in this list. Therefore, when your lens protector manufacturing company tells you that their lens protector is at the 9H hardness level, this simply means that it’s able to resist scratches and damages even from the sharpest and the hardest pencils.

Oftentimes, objects that have a 9H hardness level can only be scratched by quartz, which is one of the sharpest and most lethal materials on the scale.

What is the Regular Thickness of Lens Protectors?

The thickness of lens camera protectors depends on how the manufacturer wants it to be. But, the regular thickness of glass lens protectors would be around 0.3 to 0.5 mm.

It’s rare to see and encounter lens screen protectors that are thinner or thicker than that range. This is because the thinner it is, the less protection it’ll give, while the thicker it gets, the more noticeable it is.

What Should Be the Transparency Level of Your iPhone 12 Lens Protectors?

The transparency level of lens protectors should be above 97%. Should it be under 95%, it runs the risk of altering or lowering the quality of your lens protectors.

High Transparency lens protector

Figure 15 – Transparency levels should be upwards of 98% consistently

So, the transparency level is actually one of the main specifications you need to look at. Since it’s something that can influence image quality, you want it to be in the best and the most appropriate state and condition it can be.

Before choosing which lens protector manufacturer you’ll work with, check the transparency level of their products. If they are consistently at 98% and above, you already stepped on a landmine. Not all iPhone lens protector fabrication companies are able to promise you that.

But, here with us at SXET, you will never have to worry about the transparency level of our lens protectors for iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 11, and even on other devices! Thanks to the skill, experience, and ability of our people, we’re able to produce the best and the highest quality of lens protectors you’ve ever seen!

How Do You Choose an iPhone 12 Lens Protector?

Now, let’s get to the question that everyone is asking, what do you look for in an iPhone 12 lens protector? What are the things that you need to look at?

The following are the things that you would want to keep an eye on before you purchase a lens protector:

Diameter or Size

Of course, since you’ll be using it for business, you want to know the exact diameters or sizes of the lens protector that you’re going to purchase.

By knowing it, you will immediately identify to what devices your lens protectors will fit. The customary diameter of lens protectors is ranging from 15.5 to 16.0 mm.

Thickness

You don’t want an iPhone 12 Pro Max lens camera protector that’s too thin or too thick; as much as possible, you’d want to keep it just right.

So, value the thickness of the lens protector you are planning to purchase because it can tell you about how it will perform when it’s already being used.

Material Used

Apart from technical specifications, it’s also imperative to know what the material used in processing it was.

If you are to work with an experienced lens protector China manufacturing company, you wouldn’t have to worry about this any longer because they’ll proactively say it.

Otherwise, you have to ask and inquire about it directly.

Customization

And lastly, you want to take a look at how the customization would be. Customization simply implies that the product is available to be altered or customized based on the needs and the requirements of the clients.

These are the top things that you want to look for whenever you’re trying to scout for the best and the highest quality of lens protectors in the market.

Here’s a clip that shows you how you can choose an iPhone 11 lens protector.
